Formidable Over Forty ~ Meet Tracey Cole

Over 40 and Fabulous?  Sadly not everyone feels that way.

In my role as a 1 to 1 Life and Business Breakthrough Coach I meet many women who have reached midlife and are feeling stuck, at a crossroads, and in need of some inspiration, motivation and support. Understanding they have possibly more time behind them than in front of them they want to break free and claim back some time for themselves. They are tired of making do. Does this resonate with you?

They want to be free to live a life they truly love, not just a life that conforms to facilitating every other persons’ needs.

It is time to reframe their goals!

With this in mind, I thought it would be wonderful to interview a number of women who truly are "Formidable Over Forty" - women who can offer inspiration and show that you are never too old and it is never too late.

I am now delighted to introduce Tracey Cole and share with you her inspiring interview with me!

Lessons in Life or Both?

Many of my female 1 to 1 coaching clients share with me that they hit a block in their forties, they feel that they have lost a sense of purpose, often when their children grow up and become more independent, or they find themselves stuck at a crossroads, many suffering from imposter syndrome which has been a key factor in their self-limiting beliefs. They now realise they are getting older and want to break free. Freedom is a word they crave.

Tell us about life over 40, how has life changed for you?

I’d always worked in a scientific field, as a biochemist, university lecturer or teacher, I had a fixed and predictable salary, but I was easily bored. I went on an NLP Practitioner training to learn how to use my mind to help in my riding, which was my passion and something that never bored me. I was 44 years old. I had never thought of running my own business, because I never had a business idea! Because of that training, the germ of an idea grew. I could use the science and art of NLP to help riders be more confident and excel. I could start my own business.

I gained more qualifications and now I train equestrians and coaches and I love it. The work gives me great freedom of time, but also freedom of mind. I love that I am responsible for my business, my income, my results, this has been a huge benefit to me. I thrive on making my own choices, rather than having my work dictated by others! It’s an independence I wouldn’t want to ever give up.

What was the biggest obstacle you had to overcome on your journey?

I had no idea of marketing a business. I was shooting arrows off everywhere! It’s been a learning curve and I’m still learning, but it’s like a puzzle to be solved before the puzzle changes again!

How did you overcome it?

Initially, I employed someone to do my social media posts and began to see how she crafted them. I signed up with business coaches and learned so much.  I was keen to try out their strategies and see what happened, From there, we could analyse the best ways forward.

I’m still very much learning of course!

What is your greatest strength?

Tenacity! My maths teacher told me that I wasn’t a natural mathematician, but I was the most tenacious student he’d ever had. I can weather a storm and see the bigger picture. That picture could be miles away from me, but it’s there and I’ll find it!

Who inspires you?

People I learnt about in childhood like Ernest Shackleton. Shackleton is a Boys-Own hero, the Antarctic team leader who saved the lives of his men against phenomenal odds.

What advice would you give your 15 year old self?

Do what makes you happy! Seek freedom, not safety.  All will be well, always.  And don’t let those teachers bully you into doing science when you adore languages!!

Finally, what advice would you give someone who is reading this who is stuck and believes that it is too late to follow their dreams, to grab that freedom in order to live a life they love?

It’s never too late to follow a passion. It’s the things we don’t do that prey on our minds later, rather than the things we went for. Life is too short for taking second best!
